Materials which relate to the campaign against the Mescalero Apache and the Navajo conducted by General James L. Carleton and executed by Colonel Christopher (Kit) Carson in 1863-65. A number of documents, mostly correspondence between army officers, are contained in the book Navajo Roundup: Selected Correspondence of Kit Carson's expedition Against the Navajo, 1863-1865 by Lawrence C. Kelly, Pruett Publishing Company (1970), hardcover, 192 pages, ISBN 0871080427 Those letters, and the others not selected for inclusion in that book, are in the public domain due both to age and to being productions of employees of the United States government done in the course of performance of their duties. The documents are significant due to the continuing controversy regarding both Kit Carson and removal of the Navajo.
