appare come una libera e popolare compilazione dai vangeli canonici 1 con accentuato carattere apologetico, non sempre felice e con barlumi qua e là di tendenze gnostico-docetiche, se pur non si tratta di un semplice enfatismo di gusto popolare. Appartiene con ogni probabilità alla prima metà del II secolo: che Giustino l’abbia conosciuto e usato (Apol. 1, 35; Dial. 106, ecc.) non è certo, ma c’è ragione di crederlo. Recentemente anche altri frammenti e notizie sono stati attribuiti al Vangelo di Pietro; ma si tratta di congetture2.
