V. Mr. Da Ponte. I herein return your letter of this day, because you request me to add an answer at thè bottoni of it, where I do not find rootn enough for it. I beg you to believe that there ís noi sufficient ground for you, nor anybody, to answer anonymous letters; and I care not much to troubte myself about such assassinile atfacks. The more you will take nolice of theni, thè more thè concealed enemy will endeavour to trouble you. I had very Utile intercourse with you, when you zvas formerly in New-York, nor could I retrace my recollection to mavy circumstances of your private life. One or severa/, of them I /lave, however, retained: to wit that you appeared to me to be, firstly, a man of letters; second, a good husband, blessed with a loving wife and a good father; and thirdly, very much of a gentleman. As for any other very exceptionable matter, I never could bave mentioned, as I nevcr witnessed anything like, nor did I ever speak to any body that zvas unfriendly to yon. Non ho creduto per adesso dover rispondere all ’altre accusazioni di questo feroce ma per me sdentato mastino, che cercò rabidamente, sebben invano, lacerar il mio nome ; non ho creduto nemmeno dover parlarvi di quello ch’ei scrisse della mia nascita, della mia educazione, de’ miei studi, del mio impiego di poeta a Vienna ed a Londra, della mia pronunzia, de’ miei plagi, del mio sapere, de’ miei denti, de’ miei servi, de’ miei figli, delle mie figlie, de’ miei prezzi, de’ miei scandali, de’ miei vizi, della mia povertá, de’ miei pochi amici, della mia crudeltá e duplicitá co’ miei patriotti e sopra tutto con Mezzara ( 0 , Pinistri, Scavini e Marco Antonio Casati, tanto piú dotto, tanto piú sapiente, tanto piú rispettato ed amato di Lorenzo Da Ponte! E chi ne fa chiara testimonianza? Nell ’Eveningpost Lorenzo Da Ponte! (1) Quando si tratti /a d’impiegare costui coi signor dottor Alien, mi scrisse cosí : «Il Mezzara e la Mezzara forse non ameranno aver un italiano [parlava di sé], maestro di francese, vicino, perché probabilmente potrebbe divenire oggetto causante esclusione». Oh maledetto frate ! ed osi accusar me !
